Celebration with Palms

March 28, 2010

Procession with Palms

P Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
C Hosanna to the Son of David.
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.
P Let us pray: Mercifully assist us, O Lord God of our salvation that we may enter with joy upon the
contemplation of those mighty acts whereby you have given us life everlasting; through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.

Scene One Jesus Enters Jerusalem Luke 19:28-44

And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As he was drawing near - already on the way down the Mount of Olives - the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from our eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C It is right to give God thanks and praise.

(1)

P We praise and thank you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was acclaimed Son of
David and King of kings by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path. We ask that you
bless these branches and those who bear them, and grant that we may ever hail him as our Lord and King and
follow him with perfect confidence; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.

P Let us go forth in peace,
C In the name of Christ! Amen.

Processional Hymn All Glory, Laud, and Honor Hymn 344

Refrain:
All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer, king,
to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.

1. You are the king of Israel and David’s royal Son,
now in the Lord’s name coming, our King and Blessed One.

2. The company of angels are praising you on high;
creation and all mortals in chorus make reply.

3. The multitude of pilgrims with palms before you went;
our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present.

4. To you, before your passion, they sang their hymns of praise.
To you, now high exalted, our melody we raise.

5. Their praises you accepted: accept the prayers we bring,
great author of all goodness, O good and gracious King.

P Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
C Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of the Day

P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.

P Let us pray. Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ

to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives, and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit
one God, now and forever. Amen.

C Amen.

Lord, let my heart be good soil,

Lord, let my heart be good soil,
where love can grow and peace is understood
When my heart is hard, break the stone away.
When my heart is cold, warm it with the day.
When my heart is lost, lead me on your way.

Hymn Go to Dark Gethsemane Hymn 347
(Stanzas 1-2)

Go to dark Gethsemane, all who feel the tempter’s power;
your Redeemer’s conflict see. Watch with him one bitter hour;
turn not from his griefs away; learn from Jesus Christ to pray.

Follow to the judgment hall, view the Lord of life arraigned;
oh, the wormwood and the gall! Oh, the pangs his soul sustained!
Shun not suff’ring, shame, or loss; learn from him to bear the cross.

Hymn O Sacred Head, Now Wounded Hymn 351
O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down,
now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown;
O sacred head, what glory, what bliss till now was thine!
Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine.

How pale thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn;
how does thy face now languish, which once was bright as morn!
Thy grief and bitter passion were all for sinners’ gain;
mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain.

What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend,
for this thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end?
Oh, make me thine forever, and should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee.

Lord, be my consolation; shield me when I must die;
remind me of thy passion when my last hour draws nigh.
These eyes, new faith receiving, from thee shall never move;
for all who die believing die safely in thy love.
